What will Apple do after Sept 30?
Apple left themselves a fair amount of wiggle room during yesterday's press conference, regarding the free bumper solution. I thought it was curious that they capped the bumper give away at the end of September, then teased that they may think of something else.
Assuming that this whole thing has been blown out of proportion, maybe Apple is hoping that the problem will simply go away as more user buy the ip4 and cases become available. This seems reasonable, and it would also cap the cost of this giveaway by limiting the number of cases given. But, why tease about new ideas?
Does Apple have a hardware fix in mind? Maybe it would take them until October to engineer/test a HW tweak and retool production lines. This type of solution could be rolled out with little fan-fare, after the recent uproar dies down.
So, what do you think? Will Apple modify the ip4 design? Or, will this story fade away?

I think they will tweak the hardware in order to prevent shorting the antenna. They can only placate the crowd by vilifying the competitors for so long. After the hypnosis from yesterday's sermon wears off, reality will settle, and Apple will want to take real measures to address the problem.

Yeah, they've given themselves time to find new materials for the antenna or find a clear durable coating for the antenna
