Crossover 9
I just installed Crossover 9 on my mac to my utter surprise the damn thing actually works! Crossover allows you to run PC software WITHOUT windows. No windows, no partitions, no bootcamp, no bloatware, no virtualization, no MS. I ran some generic photo editing software that came with my camera. I managed to view, edit, and print from it. You can even place the pc icon in the dock. Crossover does not officially support this program.
Has anyone tried Crossover 9? What is your experience? Most reviews I've seen have been mixed. It's either great or POS! Which is it?
Most people have a mission critical or must have pc software where there is no mac alternative. CO9 maybe your solution. Codeweaver's efforts to run pc software on a mac is laudable. But their execution of this project maybe a never ending task of tweaks and patches and misplaced resources. Codeweaver's main resources are put into pc software where there is already a mac solution. Like CS2 and Office. Why? The reason is because of donations and advocates of said software.

It's a POS when it doesn't work and it's ok when it does. I gave up on Crossover since VMWare and Parallels got DirectX support. I do miss not being able to use my native filesystem with those apps but using a Bootcamp partition means it's not so bad, plus the VMs are more reliable. You may get a program to run in Crossover but only half the features might work - this is quite a common occurrence and you can't fix it like you can with a VM as you can configure the actual OS. Getting things like networking, printing and font support in Crossover is just a headache. I use it for small things like Windows Media joiners/converters.

It's because those apps aren't available on Linux. Crossover is based on WINE, which has been used a lot over the years by Linux users to get Windows apps like the Adobe suite to run. It just filtered into the Mac side because the support was there.
