buy an ipod now?

I have never had an Ipod (or any digital media player) before. (I know! I'm old and out of date!!!) I am thinking it is finally time to get one, but I am concerned that if I buy an IPod now, will it end up being replaced by some new Apple gadget in the near future, that I should have just waited for? Does anyone know if there is any thing new on the horizon coming out that will render the IPod "old", or should I be okay purchasing a Nano, or Touch, or something now? Thanks.
