external drive gets incorrect super block

I have an iMac that is somewhat broken and will only boot into single-user mode. I can locate my files and cat out the text files. Everything looks good. I'm trying to mount an external USB drive so I can copy the files from my iMac to the external drive. During the mount process I keep getting the error Incorrect super block. Since my external drive is empty I can format it any way necessary. So far I've tried Mac OS extended (journaled), FAT and eFat and all give me that error. Any ideas as to what would cause that error?
