Text input auto-completion: is there a way to accept without adding a space?

After three weeks as an iPhone owner, I am becoming more proficient typing on the keyboard. The auto-complete feature can be very helpful, but I am frustrated by the fact that accepting the suggestion results in a space being added after the word. Are there any ways to accept the suggestion without a space being added?

The reason I ask is that I often accept a suggestion for a word that needs to be written in plural form or as an adverb. In these cases, I must hit delete to get rid of the space. If this is the biggest problem that I have today, I'll be doing pretty well. But I would love to find a solution.

Yeah. Don't hit the space bar. Just tap the empty space beside the word.

Awesome...so obvious, but I had missed it. I had been trying to tap the word itself.
