New folder on desktop filled with items in desktop

I have a new 27 inch iMac.

At the finder lever, if I hit command-shift-N to get a new folder on the desktop, it shows up.

However... EVERYTHING that was currently on the desktop when I created the new folder is now duplicated IN that folder! This also happens if I select NEW FOLDER from the FILE menu.

I can NOT figure out what's doing this.

If I create a new user, it doesn't happen. I'm trying to avoid creating a new user.

Any thoughts?

Is all that stuff really duplicated? As in copied? So that you have two complete sets of what was first on the desktop only once? Does it take time to copy everything into that new folder? Or do you mean duplicated as: it has created aliases for/to everything that's on the desktop? And what OSX version are you running?
