CD Player shoots out cd!

OK, not fast, but it never reads the CD just automatically shoots it out. My iMac is the FIRST Intel 32-bit Core Duo processors (so over 4 years old by now) and of course no warranty! Is this a problem I can fix or do I need to take this in to the Apple store? Anyone have any ideas?
