LONG Bootup Time - Mac 10.5.8

A couple of weeks ago my IMAC 24 started taking a long time to bootup, 5 minutes and 20 seconds.

It starts with a blank white screen for 1:45, then a black & white blinking world icon comes up for 2:15, then a blinking black & white Apple icon comes on for 30 seconds, then a pale blue blank screen for 20 seconds. Then the wallpaper comes on and it seems to go to a regular boot from there. Where can I access what is happening during all of this 5:20?

Sounds like your HD is in the process of crashing.

I recommend you take 5 steps, like NOW:

    1) make a backup!

    2) make a backup!

    3) make a backup!

    4) Start up Disk Utility, select your HD and run some tests. Pay special attention to the S.M.A.R.T. report.

    5) Be prepared to take your iMac in to Tech Support to have the HD replaced with a new one.

    In that order.

    Good luck!

I agree with all these steps. Except of the first three, you probably only need to do number 1.

one backup to external HD, a second backup to USB device(s) and a third backup onto DVD / Blu-ray would be a good idea. redundancy, in this case, is a good thing.

Boot up holding Command-V. It will show you a running log of everything that's happening during that boot procedure.

Install Onyx and clean everything up (after the backup is done).

And how do you pause that log running or how can you record it so that you can actually read it all (later)?

It sounds like you have the boot drive set to look for a netboot volume. If you go into system prefs > startup disk and choose the Mac OS X folder, startups shouldn't take so long.
