I heard that G5 will not run in classic mode at all... It will only work with OSX native software... The new powermac may be the fastest OS 9 Macs available for quite a while.....(probably forever)

Sure ... they can emulate a playstation on a mac but Apple can't get classic to run on a G5. I find this very unlikely. One way or another OS 9 apps will run on the G5's.
That's not that they can't...they simply won't to force people to switch.... If you want the real power you have to use OSX-only OSX

I would seriously doubt that. OS 9 (Clasic) is going to be important for Apple for at least another year, due to the late coming applications for the graphics market (Quark, and Photoshop just to mention a few).
I can understand if it won't BOOT OS 9. It sure as hell will be able to run Apps in classic mode. Why would Apple shoot itself in the foot like that? Do you think that SW developers would create Carbon/Cocoa apps faster?
OS 9 is a lost cause anyway. By the time the G5's come out, most of the Classic apps would have been ported to Carbon and there would be no need for an old and unmodern OS.
Why would apple port os 9 to os X on an entirely new processor. It makes no sense. For one thing the g5 isn't due till at least early next year and by then os X should be at or past the 12 o clock. It would take extra dollars to port classic to a processor that no classic apps would take advantage of.

Perhpas not making it bootable, but it makes no sense to drop support altogether. Many apps will not be ported or replaced for years. What about older applications/games that are no longer in production? I know I'm not about to ditch all of my games that are 2 years old just because Apple doesn't feel like supporting OS 9.
One way or another OS 9/classic support will be in OS X & beyond. Afterall, how many 68k apps do you run on your G4? Probably none, but apple didn't remove the functionality.
The beauty of osX is that it uses a kernal to interface with the hardware. As far as I know os9 in classic mode accesses the hardware layer through osX. As long as the kernal is working correctly on the G5 the classic layer should work as well.
From what I''ve heard, even though the G5 is a 64bit chip, it will have perfect 32bit emulation and should run OS 9 just fine.

This thread is utter crap, or at least the original post. There is NO REASON AT ALL that the G5 won't run classic. The G5 will implement the PowerPC instruction set and that's all you need to run OS 9. As far as not bootable this also makes no sense. Being bootable in classic is primarily a function of the MacOS ROM, assuming that the processor implements the PowerPC instruction set, which it does. Other factor of bootability are to have proper drivers installed in the System file in order to drive other low-level components of the system.

I disagree -- by early next year I wouldn't be surprised if Apple was building machines and not updating the OS 9 drivers for them. The G5's will be compatible with older processors at the application level, but all new processors require some system software changes to support them. This means that the G5 machines will probably not boot OS9, but will be able to run classic under OSX (since its just another application in that environment). This fits well with a previous thread about versions 9.4+ of classic being non-bootable (thus OSX only).

Heard where?
Mank.

no problem, G5 won´t be here before.
bye.

Maybe Virtual PC will build an OS 9 emulator.
Then again, who cares about scruffy muscians who don't constantly buy new hardware?
I just somehow believe that somewhere in OS X there is a power hit being done by the inclusion of Mac OS X's "Classic" mode.
I would die to have a version of OS X with classic being weeded out.
