Five reasons why Detroit still Sucks

1. Their owner is a warped old bastard who's nightmarish looks are surpassed only by those of his wife, who he would not kiss on national TV when she tried to pucker up. Can't say I blame him but people only look that warped when their behavior is warped (personal theory I'm working on).

2. Biggest cry-baby fans in the league. Nobody bitches more when their team loses or has a couple bad calls go against their team. Not even New Yorkers.

3. The octopus thing. Need I say more?

4. Winning a Cup with 8 Hall of Famers on your team somehow diminishes the accomplishment. Nothing against Carolina but when you have 8 Hall of Famers, the only way not to be an utter failure is to win the Cup. But hey, nobody deserves faint praise more than the Wings, so dish it out!

5. Despite having 8 Hall of Famers, there are only about 4 [likeable] players on the entire team - Yzerman, Lidstrom (aka God), Robataille and Dandelion.

6. They think it's OK to put Jiri Slegr's name on the Cup. This is fvcking sacriledge. Here's a guy whose defense is so bad he was cut from teh Penguins two years ago (when they had one of the worst defenses in the league - I should know, I watched the bastard every week). Woudn't know his position on the ice if you drew him a road map.

I know I said 5 reasons; I added one for good measure.

Now that I'm living in Ann Arbor MI I have to deal with all this hockey crap.

"Did you watch the game last night Scott?"

"No I was here 'til 10 last night trying to do your job on a machine that doesn't work because you ignored a big problem that caused it to go south."

"Well you must have been the only one then."

Hockey is dumb. The fighting is just stupid.

    Moogs-

It's true that anything less than the cup with that roster would have been a complete failure, but in fact they got it!

Scottie Bowman, while a great coach, is a weenie, i'll give you that.

I also believe you are correct when you say Lidstrom may in fact be God.

The Slegr thing, I mean, you can't really blame Detroit for that. Those are just what the rules are. Fischer got suspended so someone had to take his place!

They did basically just buy a championship though. It's just like the Yankees. However, the rules are set up so you can do that. Annoying, I agree, but as long as the rules are set up that way, you can't expect teams with the ability to take advantage of them not to.

You have to admit though, at times watching Detroit was a thing of pure beauty. The third goal in game four was one of the prettiest I've seen in a long time.

And that's only the hockey part of it!

Aye, during a Stanley Cup series you get to see why hockey fans are hockey fans. When the game is played well, it just rulez.

I was visiting the US on business the last couple of weeks and got to see some of the Wings' games. Far superior to this lame world cup stuff clogging up the air waves here in Asia.

The fighting can be a drag when it occurs during an otherwise exciting game, but believe me when I say sometimes you just have to hit back. What most people don't realize is that while you're on the ice, things are happening so fast that the camera never picks them up.

There's a lot of skill players getting jabbed with the butt of sticks, elbows flying, people getting "pitch-forked" - at some point (these guys are men after all) you have to stand up for yourself or your teammates. Scuffles inevitably ensue. I don't like the enforcer crap where two guys just hit the ice and immediately start fighting - that clearly needs to go. But you don't see that in the playoffs anyway. This year's series between Colorado (God's gift to Detroit Detractors everywhere) and the Wings was heated but really clean. No fighting at all, really.

It's just the nature of the beast. It's a highly emotional game - for whatever reason when you're on the ice, everything seems personal. But after the game it's amazing. Guys who were taking swipes at one another 10 minutes earlier shake hands and go have a beer. It's the greatest game if you ask me. No game requires the same amout of athletic coordination, endurance, agility and toughness that hockey does.

Fischer *deserved it*, the rat bastard.

Anyway, I can blame them for this reason: Sergei Federov played defense much of the season, they were up 3-1 at home, and they would've still won without activating another defensman like Jiri "where's the puck?" Slegr.

Chris Drury's OT goals were prettier.

Also, someone who joins Lidstrom in teh God category...Peter Foresberg. That guy just got ABUSED in every series, bounced back every time, scored clutch goals / made clutch assists. He's unreal. Damn Swedes.

Hard to argue with that logic, though I will say when two teams like Brasil and Spain (or similarly talented clubs) get togther, and their fans are singing at the top of their lungs all game long, and the shots are coming fast and furious - that's when soccer is hard to aruge with. Something about the fan noise that is just intoxicating. I can see where those players get their energy from.
