why G5's should come out this summer
just to start, i have no inside sources. I am doing what people used to due back in the day and actually post rumors and not make up all this confirmed crap.
This is why i believe the G5 will come out. Does anyone remember last january when the G4 733 was released? it took almost two months to actually ship it. Now apple is shipping a dual 1ghz in 1-3 days. that means they have plenty of 1ghz G4's (because its dual) which means they probably already are testing much higher G4's (or G5's). I think this is the apollo that everybody has been talking about. If you check out <a href="http://www.siliconstrategies.com/story/OEG20020128S0037" target="_blank">http://www.siliconstrategies.com/story/OEG20020128S0037</a>
it will tell you that they have a low power version sampling at 800mhz. and its only $125 a chip (which means cheaper powerbooks maybe).
Does anyone remember that macworld uk article? they interviewed some moto guy. and he didn't say whether the G5 exist which means it does. then he said the G4 has potential left in it (how about 8 months) then he said it would top off around 1ghz. The only reason G4's would come out this summer is if they can't have the G5's ready in time which moto will have 1.2 G4's or 1.67mhz out just in case
If the G5's come out this summer then expect to go back to the day when apple shows the produect that takes at least a month to ship

This part of the story is interesting:
"The company also held off adopting G5 PowerPCs made in a 0.13-micron process. Those chips will sport a longer pipeline and hit speeds up to 1.4
GHz, but are not expected to be available in volume from Motorola until midyear."
Two things from this piece catch my attention:
First is that Apple "held off" updating the powermacs with this processer.
Second thing is that the top speed is only 1.4GHz which is too slow for the real G5. It sounds to me that Apple might name the apollo G4 as a G5.

Since the G5 was announced to start at 800MHz (well the embedded version anyway), 1.4GHz isn't that far off at all. And if the rumors are true and the chip is so much faster than the G4, 1.4GHz, maybe Dual will suffice SOOO MUCH.
G-News
If we get 1.2, 1.4 and dual 1.2/1.4 G5s, this will be a nice increase from the current G4s, allow Apple and Moto room to scale the G5s (and fab more) and also (hopefully) keep the prices low.
Why do you think it sounds as if they would do that? The Apollo G4 is in the new PowerMacs and they're not calling it a G5. If they called a faster G4 chip a G5, they'd never see the end of that nightmare. Dumb move, I highly doubt they'd do it.

Personally I can smell the g5's right around the corner, even with the latest update apples product line makes little sense. I can't see pro's continuing to be content using the same processor as an imac for too long. Expandability alone does not make a pro kit. Also, it just feels like update time apple crosses product features when transitioning from new to old tech usually for about one revision. Take the g3 tower to g3 imac transition, or the powerbook g3 - powerbook g4. Maybe they like to test hardware configs with the older "older hardware" (wich they know works) as sort of a test for the real world. Logical, since they can never be sure what new hardware is gonna do once freaky consumers and pros add all of their third party software and hardware.
ofcourse, moto could F---- things up yet again for the apple faithfull. The apolo could be thier delay mechanism cuz they still can't get thier heads out of thier a----. Obviusly apple is not as large of a concern for moto as apple customers would like them to be, hell, Apple would like them to be. I can't figure it out.
Why am I so hung up on a G5? cuz of the rumored features, 64 bit (intrigeuing), L3 ddr cache, (what do you know, it's in the newest machine in the middle of a crossover?), faster bus DDR ram architecture, embedded cache, (hey we got that too) scalability, (well beyond 1.4GHZ) and cooloest of all is the embedded altivec commands, altivec as we know it (so I've read on apples website itself) is that they wanted the g5 to have the altivec commands built deirectly into the chip. Cool, cuz app's no lomger need xtra code to execute these commands. Not only does it mean all apps get altivec but it also means that it's be a snappier process without xtra code. This includes games for those types who can't quite thier bitchin. (Apple would almost have to do this in their own cuz moto sure as hell doesn't care about altivec in it's embedded chips).
Whatever..... In the face of waiting I appreciate a forum for such speculation. Sort'a like some whacked support group for disenfranchised mac fans. I love my apple I just whish they were a bit more cutting edge like they were when I bought my Beige. Ofcourse maybe I just know far too much for my own good compared to what I used to think I knew about computers. ?????
What-what-what!?!?
Why?
Didn't anyone notice the quote in the article at MacCentral? I'll provide it for you.

"The big news here is that this device is certainly not topped out," said Swearingen.<hr></blockquote>
This tells me that they plan on making faster Apollos. They will migrate to a smaller fab for this chip and get more speed. I put my $$$ on faster Apollos throughout this year and the G5's coming out party at MWSF.

Does this mean we won't have any mobo updates for another whole year?
<hr></blockquote>
And along with those embedded Altivec commands, the G5 will have a transporter range of 25 miles. Wake up 5 minutes before work and beam yourself in! No more traffic, no more gas stations, and no more road rage! Motorola is not responsible for transporter-induced GI difficulties or premature aging. Use at your own risk.

well i started this thread before reading that forum but the only other idea i would get is that the G5 cannot be cooled down for a while to be put in the powerbook so they use the apollo's for the powerbook for sometime.
What is AMD at now?
4 to 7 to 10?
Definitely not MWNY. That's a consumer show, people always forget that for some bizarre reason.
I would expect Seybold (when is it again) so they can show off the 100 Gigaflops boxen to the professional audience.
<strong>G5 at MWSF. Yes MWSF, not MWNY. SdC will win his bet .

so what you are saying is that the other lines (imac, poerbook, etc) are just going to use the maxxed out g4 for the future?
give me a break and think
<strong>MWSF or more likely Seybold.

what the hell does that mean?
sorry but MWNY is not a "consumer show". It's called the "Creative world". I don't see many consumers running out buying 500 dollar plus passes for seminars on pdf, digital video editing, layout design, print, etc.
and macworld has been a traditional place for new powermac models and revisions.
you're statement is false and makes no sense
