Why is OWC's 800 MHz DDR2 RAM so expensive?

I own a 2008 Mac Pro model. At the time, I stuck with 2GB of RAM, as I assumed the prices of RAM would eventually drop... but they've been stuck at the same prices for several months now. What I don't get is that the DDR3 RAM on OWC's site right now is CHEAPER than the DDR2 RAM.

Would anyone have any suggestions for upgrading the RAM? Should I just bite the bullet? Should I perhaps go with a different manufacturer? I've heard DMS has decent prices. In fact, what do you think of this?

I can only assume it's because DDR2 RAM is almost legacy these days. Thus production is decreasing worldwide, which drives prices up. If you want to find spare parts for a 1950 car these days, they come at a considerable price. Same thing with old computer hardware.

That makes sense. And the slower DDR2 is probably cheaper as it's the same part.

In that case, I might as well settle with what I can get. OWC's pricing isn't too bad. I'll purchase 6x2GB, so that will bump my total RAM up to 14GB, which should be more than enough.

DDR2 prices have gone way up in the last year, but you're talking about FB-DIMMs, not normal DDR2. Those were always frickin' expensive.
