Hey guys, i just got a macbook pro i5, partition the drive into 3 parts, one has OS X, second Win7 via bootcamp, third is just data storage. So recently i tried to boot up into OS X, and the OS X option is gone, tried using the setup cd and use the disk utility, it shows 3 drive but i cant seem to reinstall OS X on the first partition. Any suggestion?

thanks.

So were you ever able to boot into OSX in that configuration? It's not really clear in your post whether you were using OSX and it just stopped working or if OSX never worked in that configuration in the first place.

OK, so the first obvious question is: Is the OSX partition still there,or did th Windows install kill the partitions unintentionally?

Well you probably reformatted the partition to NTFS or something when you installed Windows. Reformat the first partition as HFS+ and reinstall OSX.

Yup, killed it. Easy to do with a Windows installer.

OS X is gone. Erase the disk entirely, formatted as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled), and start over.

It's formatted in Master Boot Record ... OSX won't boot from that disk.

You need to reformat so that the base level of the drive is formatted as "GUID Partition Table" (and "Mac OSX Extended - Journaled" as the file system), and then start over.

(You'll need to boot from the CD, then run Disk Utility and re-partition the drive ... there should be an "Options" button that will allow you to select GUID.)

When you install Windows... do it via the Bootcamp Assistant rather than just doing it "on your own"... that will keep you from accidentally re-configuring the drive again.

Yeah, don't partition at all within the Windows installation, only use Boot Camp for that. If you really want that third partition, there are ways to do it but they can be complicated and may kill your OS installs (like you just did). Years ago, I set up Boot Camp with 3 partitions so I could share files between XP and OSX and it was a pain in the ass.

Nowadays, OSX can read NTFS partitions and Windows can read HFS+ partitions so it isn't as much of a deal to have 3 partitions now.

You did back up all of your data before doing this, right?

It sounds like he never had any data on OSX, and he still has the option to back-up Windows before he restarts stuff.

If you really want more than two partitions (really not much need for that, but everybody has their own way of organizing things), set them up during your initial re-partitioning (using the OSX DVD) prior to starting the BootCamp setup assistant.

there wasn't anything important on OS X , this is a new laptop and the first thing i did was install windows. I don't even know how to install windows by myself, I did it through the bootcamp program in OS X. I partitioned all 3 drives through bootcamp then popping in the win7 cd and restarted the computer. Not sure where i went wrong.

There are some poorly worded install options in the Windows process which are Bootcamp unfriendly. Not because MS is trying to be evil, they are just assuming that Windows will own the machine, period.

You need to very carefully read and follow the Bootcamp windows install directions and pay full attention whenever answering Windows install prompts, otherwise it is too easy to give Windows permission to take over the drive itself and reformat/re-partition. A couple moments of divided attention while moving the mouse and...
