Since I'm usually ever only sad over or because of a woman, I go straight to practically anything by The Counting Crows. Beth Orton does a lot for me when I'm sad, or Thelonious Monk, but only his solo stuff from Columbia. If all else fails, I grab a Taj Mahal CD. Great blues musician with songs to put a smile on your face, or at least give you a little hope in life
I don't really get sad about anything, but sometimes I get a bit depressed. In that case I usually listen to some Dream Theater. It's not as high energy as other music I listen to.
my favorite of all is nick drake's "pink moon" album. from start to finish, in order. it almost always has the effect of taking my mind off of ... whatever, and helping me get my perspective back.
If not the whole album, at least the first and last songs, "Pink Moon" and "From the Morning."
not because it's necessarily sad or anything, but because it's so calmly delivered and melodic, it's sort of medidtative to me.

Amy Grant - Behind the Lines, easily one of the most well crafted, well written albums to which I have ever listened. This one is also very meloncholy.
when i'm down (which seems to happen far too often), i pop into iTunes, and put the genre on Blues. I got about 60 or so songs, by various artists. When I'm real down I tend to go toward God's From the Cradle album. A bunch of those songs just hit the spot.
Sometimes I'll go to melancholy songs like nirvana's something in the way, or goodbye cruel world off the wall by floyd. that floyd 1 is just sweet in its simplicity. I also like to hit other slow songs (any one that happens to pop into my brain while i'm down). Examples: nobody home by floyd, good times bad times by the rolling stones, bring it on home by willie dixon or sung by led zeppelin.
i try not to stay on the slow, sad stuff for too long tho.
Mazzy Star's "Among My Swan" It's kind of a depressing, melancholy sort of thing. Am I wierd in that when I am depressed, I listen to music that makes me even more depressed?
First of All, If you are dying, you need to listen to RadioHead because when I listen to that music and I am the least bit depressed, I want to die...BUT:

When i get down and want to wallow i listen to Joy Divison. Usally any of there albums will work. Isolation is one of my favorite tracks.
When i want something uplifting i listen to some Public Enemy , Del the phunkee homosapien and De La Soul. And of course PRINCE PAUL anything of his is always excellent and well done. The most underrated producer in all of Hip-Hop.

I generally don't listen to music, though, for any mood.
Also, patriotic songs and such usually ring with enthusiasm.
Sesame street is for those that can't stomach religion/God and Country.
Bear in the big blue house can help, too.

these were all copied from iTunes
"All That You Can't Leave Behind," U2 helps, too.
Early Beatles stuff, I'd say pre-Help or so is some of the most purely joyful music I know.
Nirvana if I want to just wallow in it.
Jeff
Edit-Paul's Beatles stuff, anyway, even the early Lennon dominated tunes have an undertone of sadness.

The Partridge Family
These are from the Partridge family:
In the eyes of the world
I'm a loser just wasting my time,
I can't make a dime
In the eyes of the world,
Being born was my first big mistake,
I can't get a break
We grew up together with ferris wheels and sunshine laughter
a rainbow love that lasted after the rain
Now we're separated and I've become a lonely runner
and when I rest, I hurt and I wonder if I'll ever see you again
CHORUS:
Echo Valley 2-6809
I used to call that number all the time
But the last time that I called you
we hung up cryin'
Echo Valley 2-6809
I can see it clearly in my mind
But I'm scared to call 'cause it's been such a long, long time
Never been much for writin', 'cause what do you say to a dream that's dyin'
a fragile lifeline that's untyin', oh no - oh, no
I can't face the sunrise - lightin' up a road to nowhere
where you are - I have to go there - are you waitin' - I've got to know
Echo Valley 2-6809
I gotta call that number one more time
'Cause I've just got to know if you're still mine
Spoken: "Hello, operator? Get me Echo Valley 2-6809"
Operator: "You have reached a disconnected number"
And from the Carpenters:
Solitaire
There was a man
A lonely man
Who lost his love
Through his indifference
A heart that cared
That went unshared
Until it died
Within his silence
And solitare's the only game in town
And every road that takes him
Takes him down
And by himself it's easy to pretend
He'll never love again
And keeping to himself he plays the game
Without her love
It always ends the same
While life goes on around him everywhere
He's playing solitaire
A little hope
Goes up in smoke
Just how it goes
Goes without saying
There was a man
A lonely man
Who would command
The hand he's playing
And solitare's the only game in town
And every road that takes him
Takes him down
And by himself it's easy to pretend
He'll never love again
And keeping to himself he plays the game
Without her love
It always ends the same
While life goes on around him everywhere
He's playing solitaire
And solitare's the only game in town
And every road that takes him
Takes him down
While life goes on around him everywhere
He's playing solitaire
