I live in NYC.
We had a Christmas blizzard ....
For some strange reason, buses are running as slow as January molasses.
So I was forced to take a cab.
Imagine my surprise when this .... this thing greeted me in the backseat ....

Well, I suppose one can say the NYC Taxi Commission's run by thickskulled simpletons who don't know any better, and, as such, default to the lowest common denominator.

One thing to take into consideration is the developer side though. Apple's setup is far more restrictive. You have to signup to the developer program at a cost - the enterprise program too for in-house deployment. Then configure your development environment with the encryption keys, profiles and so on (their setup has about 10 steps). Then you have to get the method of installing the app onto the devices.
With Android, you can walk into a store, buy a device, compile and deploy any app you want just by plugging it into your computer.
While I agree that Apple's eco-system works better for the part where the app gets to the outside world as it is quarantined, if you run a cab company and just want to put a piece of custom software on it, Android is much better and I hope Apple do something about it. I own my own device and if I want to play around with a piece of code, I shouldn't have to get the app certified through Apple's system first and pay a fee to them every year.
Is it really worth the $1m to them to even charge people for the program? Hey you just paid them $500 for the device, how about $100 more every year to put an app on it? No, how about just let me put an app on it for free.
