iphone 3gs on AT&T without data plan?

My brother has the original iphone. He uses AT&T and jailbroke the phone and turned off the data plans. He does not get charged for the data plan and it does not get automatically added to his plan either. Is this possible for the 3GS, or does AT&T pick up the smartphone and automatically add the data plan.

What I am looking for is actual experiences and not what if or what could be.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Can't be done. We have actual experiences to corroborate this. AT&T will add the data to your plan when they see you without it using a 3GS. There's no way around it on AT&T.

So this only works for the original iphone?

I am thinking it might also have something to do when the phone was purchased. I has a blackberry 8900 that i don't have the data plan on. Didn't do anything to it and they don't add the data plan. I also have a 9700 which they do add the data plan. The only difference, the 8900 was purchased before the terms or service changed.

    Sadly, yes.

Very much so. The iPhone is required, no ifs, ands, or buts. Other phones with data plans are much more lax.

It's funny. AT&T forces you to have a data plan, which ruins their network and makes having the plan pointless because Wi-Fi would be faster in every single circumstance.

Following up on bs1211 post. How's that iPhone working /out the data plan? I want to give my kid my old original iPhone to use as his phone w/ At&t but without data plan.

The iPhone 2G is supported on AT&T without a data plan. Just go to an AT&T store and tell them to block data to the device and you'll be able to get a standard phone±text plan.

The iPhone 3G, 3GS, and 4 are the only ones forced have a data plan.

This time a tipster has told TiPb that iPhone 3G owners in the Atlanta and Austin markets who are not currently provisioned with an iPhone 3G data plan will receive an SMS message advising them that an iPhone 3G rate plan will be added to their line of service. These customers will begin receiving SMS messages today and the plans will be provisioned on the evenings of April 8th and 9th. It appears that AT&T just tapped these two cities as a trial run, the rest of the country should start getting similar alerts on April 21st.The upshot is this: if AT&T starts noticing that you?re using an iPhone 3G, they?re going to start enforcing their long-standing policy that you use an iPhone 3G plan. If you?re a regular SIM-swapper, you might be in for some hassles, depending on what your current plan is.

The thing that really rubs TiPb the wrong way is that the BlackBerry, PDA, and iPhone data plans all are $30. Why not allow us to change our devices as we see fit and keep it simple by one data plan to rule them all. BlackBerry users who try to switch their SIM to another device have long lived with the pain of not having a plan that easily works on non-BB phones. For now, iPhone plans do work fine on other devices. To use this service do the following:

    1. Put the AT&T Sim card in the already activated iPhone.

    2. Make a wifi connection to a local wifi source.

    3. Navigate to this page. Click ?Continue To The Next Page?.

    4. Click Disable Data (Fake APN). The Install Profile window appears.

    5. Click Install. Another Install Profile window will popup warning you that authenticity of this profile cannot be verified. Click Install on this window too.

    6. You should now see a message stating ?Could not activate Cellular Data Network; You are not subscribed to a cellular data service.
