are books not sync automatically across all devices?

I downloaded books from iBooks on my iPad and expected them to show up on my iPhone as well, after making sure that auto sync settings are selected. But they never did? My question is will books from one device (that not not yet synced to iTunes first) sync automatically across other devices? I was under the impression that this was part of 4.2 feature.

    They have to be synced through iTunes. They will NOT sync directly from an iPad to an iPhone.
