It is a good thing!!
I am reading a book call the Pope against the Jews and I realize that it is a good thing to live in the 21st century when the church does not have any more power on the people. But, I still do not understand the determination of the Christians to harrass people of other religions like Judaism, Islam, Buddhism. Why don't they concentrate on the Christians that are not Christians instead.

Of course, I have seen rather little Catholic missionary work as opposed to other Christian sects (Mormons, Baptists, and the Peace Corps ), so it's curious that the Pope takes the rap for Christianity.

Who harrasses other religions these days? There are certainly a lot of evangelical Christians out there, but I don't think many of them care about the Pope too much. Catholics don't tend to do too much harrassing these days.
And Buddhism isn't a religion. . . . At least that's what I have understood from reading Buddhist literature.

The trouble is people only consider Christianity to be entirely under the pope and remember too much acts of oppresson rather than all the good work that has been done. The crusades were a long time ago.

I was even VERY nice to her about it. I hope Jehova saw her.

The Crusades may have been a long time ago, but child molestation is still fresh on most people's mind.

the thread is about how Catholics, or christians in general, oppress people. molestation isn't oppression isn't sexual deviancy. furthermore, its offensive to associate the Catholic Church with molestation. The people who have molested children happened to have been mostly white men, should I assume all white men are child molesters? i hate general associations.

The church hierarchy moved and protected known child molesters, I find your denial of the Catholic Church's complicity offensive.
My point was not that child molestation is an oppresion of a peoples, but rather that such events breed mistrust.
If you'd like to discuss more current oppresion we could discuss the Catholic Church's complicity in the disapearance of Argentinian citizens under the military dictatorship of the 60's and 70's or the Catholic Church's support of the Spanish dictator Franco after the Spanish Civil War until his death in the 1970's.
Your ignorance does not confirm their innocence.
Now, there is a messy 'politics' attached to most of this ideological greatness up to even the present day, but there is real 'religion' in what they study. These are not the flavour of the month Christianities of the last 150 or so years, that are rapidly reducing western religion into a collection of feel good theological simpletons. After the Jews, and the real Christians, the situation rapidly devolves.
The Islamic and tribal world is a mess. What is the great modern contibution of the Hindu? They are all stuck in a 1000 year old brutality. Archaic and cruel. Maybe Bhuddism can be excused from this, but that's about it, when you travel east. We at least can look at our own religions and recognize their political failures and debate their ideological positions. How much of the world can do that? Jews and Catholics and Christians have taken the west, for all it's considerable faults, at least a millenia ahead of Africa and Asia. (both technologically and philosophically) Of course in recent times particularly the new Christianities seem bent on either taking us back a few hundred years, or making us spiritually and intellectually infantile.
Enough ranting, yes Moanique, it is indeed a good thing that Catholicism no longer has the power it once had, but not for the reasons you seem to imply.
