using an old imac with a new mini

would it be possible to use a mini in an old imac to take advantage of the lcd monitor that came with the older imac(prior to intel). thanks for ur reply.

    You might be able to via some awkward setup like an Elgato USB input but you'd be better selling the old iMac and buying a new display with the money. You should be able to pick up an IPS screen for less than you can sell the iMac assuming it's a G5 iMac.

    Not as a primary display. iMacs control the LCD (or CRT... lol!) directly. There is no VGA or DVI connection to speak of, and no LCD controller capable of accepting input. You can buy an LCD controller for about 2 or 3 times the cost of a new LCD display....



    However...



    You can use an old mac as a second display with some special software. If your old mac has gigabit ethernet you can use that and have a fairly usable second display. It can also work over firewire or 100 megabit ethernet at reduced frame rates.

    thks fellows. i think im better off buying a new mac and leaving my imac alone.
