Why has the Internet become so boring?

Does anyone know? It seems that every website is the same, the same boring and bad designs with as much stuff as possible crammed on to a page, flashing ads that don't match the content or the design of the page they are on,the same disorganized programming model with as many languages as possible hacked together, which for some reason is thought to be "technical",the same middle of the road viewpoints as the old media, all of the really cool and advanced stuff, like artificial intelligence, artificial life,vr enviroments, pushed off to the periphery. So what is your opinion?

My opinion is that the internet was not invented, but rather evolved. I used to use Lynx, a text-based "internet" and FTP, as well as Gopher and before that BBS'es. When something evolves, it is unpredictable, but becomes whatever nature guides it towards. IMHO, it will take a "revolution" to change the "evolution" of the internet. Whatever people want/need the most, someone will do it.

The internet has become "boring" for you for the same reason that people say they want the 60's back -- things have evolved & changed, perhaps in a way that doesn't suit someone like yourself.

I, for one, agree with you -- I am a bit scared of the direction in which the internet is traveling; however, I feel that there are enough creative individuals out there -- a sort of "dark matter" -- to reverse the progress of what appears now to be an imminent death in the form of gridlock due to advertising, big business, poor standards, etc. In time, the hackers (that's what the government will call them -- us) will forge a new internet, and we'll abandon the current one in favor of freedom.

    Regards,

    PEte

I agree that its time the time honored TCP/IP was abandoned and that a new internet that ISNT for everyone and that my mom would NOT use should be made. Im tired of good websites selling out and redesigning themselves to appeal to 40 somethings that use the internet to look smart.

The web shouldnt be a mall it should be a dominion of elite technology bigots who hate large businesses and want to kill M$ thus it should be incompatible with IE althogether!

Perhaps a proprietary patent that would be licensed freely to most but not given to any big business!

And a way to kill Ads....

    And a golden toilet...for me.

I think we are moving away from the dark age of the Internet. The dark age being WWW.

Today we are returning to the good days before the browser war. Try to look in your app folder and see how many programs that use the internet without being browsers. A quick look in mine: iTunes, QT, RealPlayer, Mail, iPhoto, SlashDock, Backup, Lyrictracker, Sherlock, Watson, WeatherPop and about five different filesharing apps. I even used a special World Cup program that kept me up-to-date with the games. More than two thirds of my use of the Internet is being done outside the browser and if AI had its own app it would be above 90%.

And I think Jaguar is showing the way with lots of specialised programs that makes the use of browser less nessesary and Thats A Good Thing?. For instance iCal: Yes you can post your calender on the web. But its much better to let someone subscribe to it so they always have an upated version and can see it on top of their own. Because WWW isn´t tailormade for anything it will become the second choice for doing something.

Perhaps thats the Apple browser to compete with IE: make it less useful by making more useful programs.

    Yep...

Nearly all the portals look the same.

And offer exactly the same services. Nothing new.

I believe the net is not invented enough yet...

And it needs something that Shakerspear and all the other big autors were to the literature (as books..)

Personally i hate the useless flash things most.

I have a slow modem... and 99% of the flash things are done in flash only for doing them in flash.. so i have to wait and wait and wait.. to get no info but stupid animations and sounds that i was not looking for.

The worst is when they "forget" to give a skip alternative or that there are people who prefer the html..!!!

Hm... maybe someone should open an anti-boringness links thread. So to feel better... links for sites that are not boring

I guess the language problem id because there aer now so many others than english speakers surfing. So to offer the alternatives.. how to do it?

I guess by having all the altenratives (only the language choise) on the first page.

Personally i'm rather lazy.. so u can find all the languages a bit everywhere..

Should i open the anti-boringness links thread??

Websites have become boring because everybody copies off of everybody else, and they overload the web sites with useless geegaws.

    Some unboring sites:
