I can't afford a new MacPro, so I was thinking of getting a used 2009 MacPro (1366 socket) and stick a (non-Xeon) i7 in there. Any reason why this shouldn't work?

Too many to count. Just get something REAL that is refurbished.

The chip won't work. You can't just rip off the heatsink, pop it in, slather some cooling paste on it, and put the heatsink back on. It has to be a Xeon chip and it has to work with the chipset.

OK, thanks, that helps. So the only thing to upgrade to is a faster CPU of the same class?
