Check The Detroit New or The Detroit Free Press (their websites). There was this guy in the Detroit area that is running a spam business out of his house. The a couple ISPs are suing him. And he has other lawsuits against him. He is all smug about it and playing up that he is the victim of bad media and stuff.

problem is this was just a application of a law already in place for phone lines.

has nothing to do with computer/e-mail spam.

however, it would be nice if they would take these laws and port them over to e-mail. i know fax spammers have been fined before, just not to this extent.

The state I live in (Delaware) has very tough anti-spam laws, but I don't know of any instances of anyone actually being prosecuted,I'd personally like to sue some of the spammers,I'm tired of having my mailbox bombed all the time.

    I LOVE it! Good! Bastards.

I am SO sick of this unwanted crap showing up in ever communication-oriented area of my life!

I get junk mail in my real mailbox (stupid mattress sale flyers, oil change coupons, etc.), I get AT LEAST one telemarketing call a day and I get anywhere from 4-15 spam e-mails a day.

I long for the day I can go to my mailbox, answer my phone or check my e-mail and know that everything there is legit, wanted and useful.

    Think it will ever happen?

Republican, Democrat or otherwise, the first politician who comes along and makes this his primary platform will get my vote and support 100%.

And I don't wanna hear any crap about "free speech" either from some of you...

Fax.com Fined $5.4M for Junk Faxes

    that's the title.

"Fax.com appears to have founded its business on the practice of sending unsolicited faxes in flagrant violation"

The fine is also the FCC's first against a company known as a "fax broadcaster."

dude, read your article. it's about faxes, not e-mail.

I've gotten to this point, more or less. I signed up for Georgia's no-call list, which has virtually eliminated the phone calls. Writing direct marketing agencies and opting out of their services will cut your junk mail in half -- filling out Form 2150 at the post office will eliminate the rest. Finally, by using multiple e-mail addresses, I keep myself from most e-mail spam. I have two addresses - one that only people I want to receive mail from know. This includes friends, family, and some businesses (for bills, etc), provided they have an option for me to opt out of any "special offers" or sharing of my name. I use a hotmail account for any time the site requiring an e-mail address seems dubious. That way I can check it if I have to, to get a password or something, but generally I never use it.

So scates, the short answer is: that day has arrived. You just have to be proactive and with time, it will pay off. I love the feeling of doing just what you said - getting the mail or answering the phone, etc., without worrying about sales pitches.

"Junk e-mail foes target spam king" was the title of the article at the link I posted. I didn't start the thread. ThinkingDifferent did. My link WAS about email spam. ( I assume this post is directed at me and my last post before this )
