I know Apple has layers of gooey ontop, but what's it based on?

And why can't everything be wifi direct already....I want multiple networks!

I think Apple went the proprietary route for a number of reasons. Possibly to ensure properly encrypted transmission of iTunes DRM media and also to associate it directly with what it's used for in the interests of marketing.

Intel have a similar proprietary tech called WiDi. They will all be based on the same standards - they have to be as there's no other wireless signals coming from the machine as well as the fact there is software to allow it to work on Linux and support other devices.
