dallas

ok, so i just got back from my first trip to dallas, even though ive lived in texas for 10 years now...

oh, and i stopped by the apple store up in plano while i was there and got my ipod replaced.

ok, a few observations about both this city (plus surrounding areas) and the apple store.

-every driver i passed had a cell phone stuck to his/her head. ive never been anywhere in this country that was as bad about driving with phones as dallas. even the wreckless speed demons were swerving around while talking on the phone (i make a point to follow all drivers who are more psycho than myself and see who they are).

-signeage is terrible. even worse than houston, which is apparently possible. the downtown part of the city wasnt too bad, but anything outside of 5 miles had the most insanely labelled (or lack thereof) signs ive come across. the streets on maps and the streets themselves rarely agreed. instead of using numbers, as used in maps, they decide to use only names (that arent shown on the maps) and never even put up a sign saying the street name is also a number. ie, highway 190 = george bush parkway apparently, but i had to figure that out purely on guess based on looking around for highway 190 for 30 minutes without ever coming upon something with that label.

-the apple store is incredible. i got my ipod replaced, as it wasnt holding the battery charge anymore. its almost a year old, but i had no problem getting it switched out with a new one (charging as i type). i chatted with the "geniuses" for quite awhile about various things, rumors, etc. i knew more about tricks with the ipod than a few of them, but didnt say anything to make them feel bad. great feel all around in that place. also, the location of the mall they chose for the store is quite amusing. it is the richest town ive ever come across in texas. while driving in the neighborhood surrounding the mall (which took me forever to find based on the shitty signeage), i noticed that about half the cars on the road were either mercedes or jaguars. inside the mall itself, it was equally rich in feel. i havent felt so out of place in a long time. inside many malls, there are cars from local dealers that are there for advertisement or giveaway, etc. most of the time there are kias or hyundais or mazdas--cheaper cars. well, in this mall, there were jaguars (the high-end models). i found that especially amusing.

so, i suppose thats a good location for the apple store, seeing as noone in the area would have any problem throwing around money for computers...

-madisonville is my new favorite place. its a great spot to hide from cops are night... <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

all in all, a strange trip including getting lost repeatedly, frustrated with stupid drivers, joy at getting a brand new ipod, and fear while running from, and escaping 2 cops at once. an "interesting" trip to say the least.

    Watch "JFK".

It's the little hill in Dealey Plaza (where Kennedy was shot) that some people think a mysterious, never-confirmed second shooter was stationed and delivered the famous "kill shot", which was caught so graphically on the Zapruder film.

The grassy knoll. Looms large in JFK assassination lore.

I can totally relate to the "out of place" feeling when one gets when in the area surrounding an Apple Store.

Well, when I was in Dallas earlier this month, I had almost the exact opposite feeling. It was an incredibly easy city to get around; the highways/freeways were amazing! And I felt after living in Portland all my life that I had come home to where I belonged. But whatever, we all have different views.

Dallas is an especially nice city. I like it. My sister lives in Plano.

Dallas is growing exponentially. I've never seen so many corporate headquarters in one city. I visited Deep Ellum and enjoyed the atmosphere.

Dry counties are weird. There are restaurants and malls everyfvckingwhere! It seems that's all people in Dallas do is eat and shop.

Here I am standing on the spot JFK got popped. The grassy knoll is literally "back and to the left."
