Fujitsu ScanSnap driver trouble

I have a ScanSnap S510M that I bought in Japan. It worked fine until yesterday when, for some reason, I decided to instal the English driver from the Fujitsu US downloads page.

The English version wouldn't recognize the device at all. So, I decided to uninstall and reinstall the Japanese version. Fuijitsu's page said trash the ScanSnap folder and delete Trash. Did that and then went to install the Japanese version and got an error message saying there was a newer version installed and couldn't install.

Anybody know what might have been installed somewhere that is preventing the complete uninstallation?

My workaround for now will be to scan to another computer, but I would like to get the main machine running again without having to reinstall the OS and all apps and whatnot.
