There was something on the telly today about Linux on Xbox...

    No. That's bad. Don't do that.

    Get a Playstation 2 and a new iMac.

    Then swear on a Bible that you will never touch a PC agian.

    You need a chipped Xbox, IIRC....

    Sony will sell you a fully supported Linux setup for PS2...

    I own all 4 consoles including the GameCube, PS2, Dreamcast, and Xbox.

    The DC can boot Linux from a simple CD-R you can download and burn. You don't need it chipped and while it is definitely an older version of Linux, people are still working on it and just hacked the modem.

    I have the BBA for it and it is fully supported. It's actually pretty cool when using the keyboard and mouse too.

    The Xbox, on the other hand, has the hard drive but needs a mod chip which requires a good deal of soldering. There's also the small problem that the Xbox will reboot every time you open the drive so you can't switch discs. I think some mod chips have overcome this, but they are fairly new. I should mention the hard drive is kind of small, either 8 GB or 10 GB depending on which Xbox you get, they can have either and there really isn't a way to find out.

    The HD is also formatted into four 2 GB partitions, and I believe they are seperated as saves, music, add ons, and system software.

    Then there is the PS2. It has a supported Linux install as well as a 40 GB HD. Unfortunately, the PS2 is still $200 and the kit is expensive and hard to find. The HD is also incompatible with all games; a seperate HD for games is still forthcoming.

    The GCN has no Linux installs as of yet, which is important to note as the GCN is the cheapest console that you can find 'new'.

    A DC for Linux is the cheapest option, running about $45 for a used system, with a keyboard and mouse running about $5 each.

    Other than that, you should probably just get a cheap PC or run Linux on your Mac.

    Why would you even bother? Just get a PC.

    found this <a href="http://playstation2-linux.com/"; target="_blank">http://playstation2-linux.com/</a>;

    no i * DO * HAVE A PC.

    but the idea to use a not-computer to have linux sounded so *cool*

    i thought to ... well teach my dad use a computer and give him my ex laptop

    .. so i'd like to have something weird for linux then.. what game console do you suggest??? <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

    Like I said earlier, don't buy the Xbox for this, it's not far enough along in development and you have to mod your system.

    The PS2 Linux is supported, but look at this:

    <a href="http://www.us.playstation.com/purchase/hardware/"; target="_blank">http://www.us.playstation.com/purchase/hardware/</a>;

    $200 for a system + $200 for Linux kit = Too much $ for Linux.

    On the other hand ~$55 for the Dreamcast and Linux (although the Linux is older) isn't so bad.

    You can probably find DCs cheaper than that, and they're only going to gain value.

    Ain't the games industry weird? <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />

    *OFF THE SUBJECT*

    I am a beta tester for Xbox LIVE...it's coming in the mail tomorrow....ahhh I can't wait. Strange; I really used to hate every that had to do with Microsoft, but you know, I just can't turn down a videogame system (I have a GBA, a Gamecube, an Xbox, and a PS2).

    I am also beta testing Xbox Live. Prepare for disappointment.

    Revolt will not work after November 15. Neither will NFL Fever 2003 that they include.

    Then there is Whacked which is just a beta/demo version which tries to get you to buy the full version and Moto GP which will work online regardless but you need the full version to unlock anything. :|

    Of course Sega has NFL 2k3 and NBA 2k3 live, but Sega has experience with online play from the DC and can do no wrong.

    But you have to pay for the Sega games, they don't come included, and don't look for Unreal Championship or other games until November 15.

    (BTW, sorry to burst your bubble but I've been very disappointed by the system since I got my kit).
