Any Brits care to explain "wOOt!"

I've seen this posted in a number of different on-line communities and I'm never sure what it means. It usually seems to follow some light hearted razzing, as in: "You fellows with single processors don't know what you're missing. wOOt!" But it has been used in other ways too.

Any of you British posters care to explain? wOOt!????

Hmmm I just did a few searches and found that it could mean 'Worm Out Old Tossers' But I really don't know, I've never heard this before.

nOOb seems to be 'newbie' just like myself a nOOb

w00t belongs to gamers the world over. It seems to have been derived from the obselete 'whoot' which essentially is another way to say 'hoot' which itself is a shout or derisive laugh. But others maintain that w00t is the sound several players make while jumping like bunnies in Quake III. Still others want you to believe that it comes from the phrase 'wow loot' used in multiplayer RPGs many moons ago. Fiction or fact? I suppose you'll just have to decide what 'w00t!' means to you...

When folks say w00t, I want to punch them in the face. Almost as much as when TLC runs the commercial for the 'hackers' special. "White hacks and black hacks, and hacker is a good word, and ps I'm a wanna be techie goth weenie and I am a nerd to. pps, I have no life". Man I hate those commercials. HE deserves to be thrown. Where is Mr. T when you need him?

A friend of mine told me once that it originated from a game called "Everquest" and it is a trucated form of "wonderful loot."

That would explain why it's so prevalent on Ars.

As a Brit I thought wOOt was an Americanism.
