3GS stolen... sign on for a new contract?

So, I'm financially weighing my options here... my 3GS was stolen last night... I'd really like to switch to Verizon as AT&T service is exceedingly poor/nonexistent in many parts of Los Angeles. However, I also know that the iPhone 5 is probably coming this fall and on top of that, my contract with AT&T doesn't end until july or something like that (I'd probably owe them about $75 for the cancellation).

My question is... if I go through with this and pay $200 and a sign on for a 2-year contract with Verizon, would I be able to cancel the contract 5 months from now, pay the remaining $300 of the ETF and walk away with an iPhone 4 I effectively paid only $500 for and could probably sell for a good amount? Could I then immediately re-sign for a new two year contract and be offered the subsidy? Or, does Verizon have measures in place to prevent people from doing stuff like this?

It seems cheaper than buying a contract free iPhone 4, which is over $600, if this works...

Thanks,

Michael
