How to manage the same photo library between Mac and Windows

Hey all,

My computer ('06 MBP) is due for an update, and I was planning to get a Macbook Air for my daily computer. The main reason I need to update my computer is that Aperture 3 can barely run on my MBP.

However, I realize that the MBA is really not made to deal with a program like Aperture. I was therefore thinking of buying an iMac, but the only one with a decent video card that will futureproof me for 3-5 years is the $1999 model, and buying both an Air and a 2k iMac is a little too pricey for me.

As a solution I was considering buying my Air and building a Windows tower that would be as powerful as the iMac for a lot less. I was wondering if it's possible to manage the same photo library between two computers (i.e. take my Air around with me and import photos to an external, and then later edit them on my tower using the same external). I realize there's no real way to do this with Aperture, but what about with Lightroom? Any suggestions?

Thanks
