"Like this music" internet service found!

A couple of times I have asked if anyone knew about a service that allowed to say "I like this and this band. What kind of music is related to it?" and noone have known about such a place.

Now I found it! It links bands based on the users feedback of the bands they like instead of one persons preferences. And it works! I tried to give it some names on some contemporary post rock bands (Tristeza, Mogwai and Tortoise) and wanted to see if it would link them up with older bands that normally is categorised as a different kind but I see have a lot in common (My bloody valentine, Slowdive). And it did!

Try it and see if its useful for you. And please let more people try it out. The larger its database gets the better its suggestions will be.

<a href="http://www.allmusic.com"; target="_blank">www.allmusic.com</a> is pretty good too (although it's 'manual' rather than automatic.)

And thats what makes the difference! Allmusic doesn´t recomment cross genre. It doesn´t´tell me which classical composers Guns´n´Roses fans like.

That's an interesting feature. I think it's better at tell you what the artist's influences are, and that could be cross genre of course. But again, it's not automated but it is accurate.

The only problem I can see with this is when it gets lots of people inputting data you'll end up with the obvious suggestions.

You mentioned linking rock bands to classical, but, if I'm not very much mistaken, the links to the 'cheesy' popular classical musicians will soon swamp any real links due to the very nature of the algorithms used.

Similarly, I don't want the opinions of an 'average' person who listens to the same bands as me as the results will necessarily be obvious.

You might as well buy whatever is at the top of the relevant charts or the best [reggae|rap|bluegrass] album in the world...ever.

Then again I've never understood the appeal of the 'sounds like' system that I believe all music use either.

Asking people you meet who love music as much as you do what they have listened to, what they liked and why, seems like it will always be the best approach.

edit: I just had another go and I'm wondering in what way this is better than Amazon.com's 'people who bought this' links?

<a href="http://www.gnod.net/"; target="_blank">gnod</a> (they also do books and movies) has been around awhile and when i saw the mention, i went back to it.

it's fun to mess with but i wouldn't buy any music based on it's suggestions.

it used to be you could ask a record store clerk for ideas, and they could suggest something and even play it for you, but places and people like that are getting rare.
