Yikes even if they are McJobs could you imagine it hitting this rate in the U.S? We start going nuts if it gets above 6% nowadays.

I'm sure that German probably carries much better unemployment benefits so while it causes some turmoil it is semi-civilized.

If it happened here there would probably be robbing and looting occuring...

U.S.... keep them employed.. they have guns....

No wonder Asia and the rest of the world is banking on US's growth. Europe is too messy and they are more focused on trading among themselves.

To kickstart Germany growh and employment, the unemployment benefits must go. Who wants to work if they can get such benefit allowances?

Apparently, there are still quite a number of blue-collar jobs and odd jobs in Germany which are left unfilled. Many workers shirk away from such work as the pay is less than the allowances they received.

We have even better unemplyment benefits and our unemployment rate has gone down fo the last twelve years.

Just because you don´t have to starve if you are unemployed people still want to work.

In the UK we solved this by still paying a fraction of the jobseeker's allowance (as we call it) so people in shitty part-time jobs are still better off than being unemployed.

It's not rocket science, and it doesn't require taking the moral high ground about 'social parasites' who *shock horror* won't do something that reduces the amount of money they receive.

They don't make the rules up, they just play by them.

I'd also be surprised if the Germans didn't already do something like this.

The article also notes that the rate is 8.8% in the West and 18% in the East. That suggests to me that the main problem is structural unemployment.

Also, after they recount to be in line with the rest of the EU (and the US I believe) the rate should drop by about a sixth. That gives 7.4% West, 15% East, and 9% overall.
