Another nite club tragedy...
<a href="http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/Northeast/02/21/deadly.nightclub.fire/index.html" target="_blank">Link</a>
"WEST WARWICK, Rhode Island (CNN) -- A fast-moving fire -- ignited by an indoor pyrotechnics display during a concert -- killed at least 54 people late Thursday at a Providence, Rhode Island-area nightclub, officials said."
I was in a situation almost as tragic and exactly the same circumstances...with pyotechnics in a small club. Why they still practice this is beyond me.
There was a reporter there who taped the whole thing. It brought back memories...
I went to see a band in a club in Wildwood NJ on 4th of July weekend in the '80s. They had tiny fire pods behind the drummer that went off...setting a plastic tarp ablaze above him. No one, not even the drummer noticed until hot flaming plastic hit him and he yelled to a roadie to put it out. It was put out. Luckily for us there was no stampede or a horrible burning shell of a building and bodies .
Why they let these things happen is beyond me. We seem to never learn. <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[oyvey]" />

Oh yeah, maybe in a huge arena like Madison Square Garden. Maybe even a gymnasium. But a small club with low ceilings?
Pathetic that this happened. <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[oyvey]" />
I remember when I was a kid: local news at 6, world news at 6:30 (Cronkite, Frank Reynolds or whoever). Then local news at 11:00 followed by Mr. Carson.
Kinda nice, wasn't it?
Every so often, say if Elvis died or something, they'd interrupt "All My Children" to let everyone know, then it would be back to the scheduled programming ("Watch CBS News tonight with Walter Cronkite for more on this breaking story from Memphis...").
Now, if some idiot from "Joe Millionaire" announces she has the clap, all the cable news networks create logos, theme music and base anywhere from 6-32 hours of programming around it, complete with experts (retired porn stars), a conservative and liberal debate ("The government has no business knowing about my cooch...it's in the Constitution!", countered with "we need a Federal program to study reality show programming and how it relates to venereal diseases, especially among African-Americans and Latinos...") and constant footage of the press conference where said dingbat makes the horrific announcement.
On a day like today, I have to say that I honestly wouldn't mind ALL of these networks going under. Forever.

I can't even imagine a gymnasium. Pyrotechnics indoors w/out a highly-trained professional is a massive no-no.

That's why I said maybe.
You can be assured that my kids are going to watch that footage over and over again. Fire Exits, kids, fire exits.

I'm not cracking a joke here, this is surprising.

1. Quiet Riot
2. Dokken
3. Sebstian Bach
4. Various Led Zeppelin/Doors cover bands
5. Living Color?
6. insert next has-been metal/hair rock band
Pretty pitiful. But still, they entertained their fans. And the fans should have fun in a safe, professionally run environment. This wasn't it. Great White has been accused on the news from previous club owners that they have installed and used these pyros without informing the owners on numerous occasions...
Great White...time to shelve the hairspray and hang up the spandex. They won't be needed in prison.

80's hair metal...the best! Striped guitars with pointy headstocks, spandex and bandanas galore, makeup, Marshall cabinets stacked 15' high (only one would be actually used, of course), drummers who were prettier than most of the girls in my high school, etc.
There were about 20 of us there-and there's nothing to do around here for like 200 miles. That's why I was surprised by what Great White was drawing
But Cum On Feel The Noize still rocked, man!

<strong>I haven't even THOUGHT about Quiet Riot in at LEAST 17 years. Holy cow...

Actually, Great White had an excellent show. Technically great, even if you didn't get into their music. They won't need an excellent show where they're going, although I think it's the club management's responsiblity as well.
Nothing in their contract about pyros. Check it out:

Finboy...you don't sport a mullet do you? <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[oyvey]" />
<strong>Boy I tell ya if you have footage of stuff on fire you can bet the 24 hour news channels will roll it over and over and over...</strong><hr></blockquote>
I understand your complaint but when 96 people die in a fire it's always going to be a big story - bigger than just about anything else.

There was a report on the local news tonight about another band who played there some 20 times. One of the band members had videotape of his band using pyrotechnics. It appears that pyros certainly were allowed by the owners of the club.

One thing I read about this jumped out at me...apparently bands have used pyro there before (yikes). The problem is, the club was ordered to soundproof the stage area because of compliants from people living nearby. However, the ceiling tiles used were of polyurethane and very flamable. I forget the kind they should have used, I wasn't able to dig the article up. The sticking point of course is whether the band had permission, and if so from whom. The venue's stage manager apparently gave the OK. If he did this without consulting his boss...(shrug). Of course, the band should have known better too. Why even bother with that sort of stuff? I remember Great White from back when I was in jr. high, and they were an pretty decent band. More bluesy rock than heavy metal. They apparently lost one of their members in the fire as well. Just a terribly sad situation all around.

I am kidding.
