Hard disk spin down on upgraded Pismo

Hi,

I don't know if anyone else is having this problem, but I upgraded the HD in my Pismo/400 to an 20 GB IBM Travelstar, and it doesn't seem to spin down at all when I'm running 10.1(.1). I've set the Energy Saver control panel, waited the requisite amount of time, but it stays spinning (and it's kinda loud, so it's annoying).

Is there something that's running in the background that's keeping the drive busy? (I turned off the screen saver). I'd like to get some extra mileage out of my battery, and this seems like the prime suspect.

TIA...

    That sounds as if the energy settings have been set to permanent mode. The drives internal settings can be altered with a little application available at <a href="http://www01.u-page.so-net.ne.jp/gb3/eijim/"; target="_blank">http://www01.u-page.so-net.ne.jp/gb3/eijim/</a>;

    , sorry the site is japanese, but versions for OS X and classical Mac OS are available, the version for the latter is provided in an English version too.

    Just try it, it should work with the Travelstar as well. The small app is pretty self explanatory.

    Not sure if it works in X, but in OS 9 you can hit Command-ctrl-shift-0 (zero, not 'oh') to spin the disk down.

    Apm tuner is swell, too.

    Thanks Kate. That little utility does work, but using it I found that some background process is hitting the hard disk every 15 seconds. Like clockwork. So I guess I've resigned myself to having a hard disk that's constantly spinning. Arrrr...
