CPU throttle down: Is it possible to detect it?

I've been told OSX automatically "throttles down" the CPU on some machines in case of excessive overheating.

Is it possible to check if the CPU is running at full speed? Is it output in some system dialog, or can I check it in the Terminal or something? How?

Thanks a lot!!

Sorry, I don't know the answer but would be interested to find out.

In OS 9, System Profiler would show the current clock speed of the processor (my iBook was set by default to run at 366MHz when on battery rather than 466MHz when on power supply) unfortunately OS X removed this information :-(
