Hello,

I have an Airport in my house and working very well with my Dell Desktop and my G4 PowerBook. I have an old G3 Powerbook, but do not have an Airport slot for it (Pre-Airport days!)

Can I purchase a Farallon card and simply get up and running on the Airport Network? Any particular cards people recommend? Anything else I should know?

Thanks a bunch,

Amit

A Airport card should work with the PB. It's just a standard pcmcia card. If you want to go with a non-Apple card, I've heard the LandWave cards come with OS9 drivers. What OS are you using? If you are using OS X, you can obtain drivers here:

That would explain why alot of people use the wavelan cards in the G3 PB.

WaveLan, Farallon Skyline, and Lucent Orinoco cards all work fine on the PowerBook with Mac OS 9.

I have a Skyline card (2 MB) working on my PowerBook 1400 in OS 9. It works great for me. Hopefully, your experience will be better because you should be able to use the Airport software.

But what about Mac OS X? I rarely use OS 9.

    Which card supports OS X?

    Thanks Guys,

With the driver posted above I believe each of the mentioned cards is supported, read the driver's readme [it is an OS X driver].

OS X support for these 3rd party cards is mainly by open source people and they have put out regular updates.

OS X support for the cards is coming, no doubt, but I don't believe there is actually a card shipping that has OS X support out of the box.

Don't you need to by the Airport card or basestation to get the Airport software?
