Disabling the startup sound

I have an amplified speaker connected to my G4. Therefore when I bootup my Mac the startup sound is very loud which is bad for the speaker. Before I shutdown I usually mute the sound. However, there are times that I forget to do it. Is there a way to disable the startup sound? If not, does anyone know of a Applescript that I can put in my shutdown folder that will mute the sound for me? I would want a script for both Mac OS 9.2 and Mac OS X?

On MacOS it's a one line script:

    set volume 0

Don't know about OSX, probably the same.

    (volume levels are 0 - 7, 0 being silent)

This requires Standard Additions be present in the Scripting additions folder, this has been standard for a while (MacOS 8.1?)

    Hope this helps.
