I phone 3GS not updating due to corruption

I have an I phone 3gs (AT&T service). I can't get it to update. I took the phone to the local AT&T store. There one of the managers said he would try it. He connected it to his personal laptop after downloading I tunes. He attempted the update only and the phone wouldn't even try to start. He then backed my memory up on his laptop and started the full update. It strted this time. It took appx. 45 min and with just 2% left to finish an error screen appeared saying the phone could not be updated due to file corruption. I recieved the same message while attempting the upgrade on my personal laptop. Any input on how I can correct this problem?

    Download iOS 5 manually.



    Install it manually.

    Option-clicking Update in iTunes and choosing the file.
