Iphone - can someone explain how purchasing one works in the UK? What if i buy one an

I went to buy an iphone online today. Online it says you pay £269 by credit or debit card and the phone is with you next day. It then goes on to say you have to activate it and choose a tariff when registering with itunes. What happens if i pay for the phone but when registering i fail the credit check? Am i then left with a phone i cant use? has anyone experienced this method of registering a phone or gone through this process? Please help!
