Connecting from an OS X Mac to an OS9 Mac

I just upped my G4 to X, but now I'm having problems hitching up to my OS 9.2 G3. When both were running OS 9 they networked with no prob. I keep getting an this message when trying to hook up to the G3 via AppleTalk:

Login failed

Unknown user, incorrect password, or log on is disabled. Please retype the name and password or contact the server's administrator.

Anyone have any ideas? One issue might be that although my G3's settings were unchanged, I reformatted my G4's drive before installing X because I was running into some minor issues with it. Unfortunately, I initially set up this little network eons ago and I have no idea how I went about it and I'm clueless now how to get these machines to say hi to each other again.

I also have a iMac DV running OS 9.2 that I need to hook up to the other two machines and I'm stuck until I get this initial communication problem solved.

Any help anyone can give me would be excellent!

Thanks.

Dave S.

it doesnt work for me either. i think it did once or twice, but i had to keep typing in the IP address of the computer i was connecting to like 100 times before it stopped giving me that same error message.

i'd be interested in hearing a solution too, if there is one.

Unfortunately, that document refers to X not seeing the other computer in the Connect to Server dialogue box -- an issue that was resolved in the 10.1.3 version that I'm running. The G4 has no problem seeing the G3, it just won't let me connect to it.

You mean connecting over AppleTalk to the OS 9 G3 as an AppleShare server? (through OS 9's built-in file sharing)

I don't have any problems as long as I set the OS 9 g3 to allow clients to connect over IP instead of appletalk. I don't use AppleTalk on my network anymore.

I can't tell from the post whether you have just two machines connected via a cross over cable or whether you have a hub or a switch. Also can't tell which side is trying to connect to which (sorry).

    Short of it is:

On the OS X box go to system prefs and enable file sharing. Make a note of the IP address. If one is not assigned go to Network (I think) and set an IP address.

On the OS 9 box go to the chooser, click Appleshare and click Server IP Address then enter the IP address you made a note of earlier. It should present you with a dialog box. Enter your OS X user name and password to get access to the whole machine. Login as guest to get access just to your public folder on the OS X box.

To login to the OS 9 box from OS X first go to the File Sharing control panel of the OS 9 box. Start File Sharing and click the button for enabling TCP/IP sharing. Make a note of the IP address displayed here. If one is not available you need to first go to the network panel and set one somehow (various ways). Make sure to enable sharing for the desired volume or folder.

Next go to OS X and from the Finder menu bar select GO then the last option is Connect (I think - going from memory here). When this panel opens type in afp://(IP address of the OS 9 box). You should be presented with the login dialog for the OS 9 box.

I've kind of glossed over a few things. Hope this helps.

    >>>to make things faster in the future, make aliases of the drive/folder you logged into...hey it makes things faster for now.

Thanks. I'll give it a shot first thing tomorrow morning.

Incidentally, I'm hooked up via a switch, if that matters.
