Digital Camera puchasing advice

Need some advice please people!

I am thinking about buying a Sony Digital Camera. Specifically the <a href="http://www.sonystyle.com/digitalimaging/P_Feature_P71.shtml"; target="_blank">CyberShot DSC-P71</a>.

What do you all think? I can get it for £350 (about $550...woah...it is a helluva lot less in the US - suprise suprise).

Anything else I should consider. I need it to be able to do A4 size prints well. I also like the IXUS v2, but the quality is less for the same money.

Edit: Just remembered: will this camera work with imagecapture/iPhoto? The P30 & 50 is listed, but not the P71 - will it work?

Thanks!

    IXUS every time.

I have been using an Ixus since they first came out. Mine has been nothing but reliable with over 9,000 shots taken I have only had 3 that were corrupt (and they ere all on the same card at the same time).

I also use a Minolta Dimage 7, which is an excellent camera also but i still use the IXUS 50% of the time. It is so compact I always have it with me.

90% of the photographs on this site were taken on the IXUS.

my friend has that camera and its a great 'all in one' solution. Take short movies with sound, huge pics, usb connection, etc.

The picture quality is pretty good I guess.

I personally have an Olympus D-460 and have seen other friend's Olympus' picture quality and I love it. I havent seen better quality digital pics than Olympus. Then again, I havent seen many other brands. All the pics at my <a href="http://homepage.mac.com/zo66"; target="_blank">homepage</a> (which currently has pics from my friend's bday party) were all done with my 2 year old D-460. Its a bit bulky by IXUS and Sony standards, but I still love the quality).

Fact is, I like Sony and their devices. However, for digital imaging I stuck with Canon because they offer much more for less money. My current digital camera is a Canon Digital IXUS 300 (should be a PowerShot 300 in the US) and I am really satisfied with it.

Personnaly I find digital cameras to be overpriced, so I shopped around and got a good discount on an older model.

Of course this strategy was dependant on my objectives (2 million pixels, 3X optical zoom, rugged, pocket size, iPhoto compatible, 350 euros max); in my case it has served me well.

Yes. Right now is a great time to buy a digicam. Resolution is going up while price is coming down. I've seen a nikon coolpix 885 for 365.00 US. That's a great friggin' deal.

I strongly urge you to look into the Canon G2 and the Nikon Coolpix 5000 cameras. Both can be found for about $600 US... here, for example: <a href="http://www.bwayphoto.com/"; target="_blank">Broadway Photo</a>.

Both the Canon and the Nikon are fantastic cameras, the Canon with 4 megapixels and the Nikon with 5.2. I have a Nikon Coolpix 990 and it's absolutely amazing for a consumer level camera. Full manual controls and a full automatic mode, support for speedlights, lenses, etc. In case anybody cares, here's a couple pics I've taken with the Coolpix.

And I'm obviously not a professional photographer or anything... the camera just makes it so easy for me to take really good pictures. And by the way, these pics are only maybe half or less of their original resolution, which is 2048 x 1536 native on the camera.

I've had the best experience with my Sony, and I've spent a significant amount of time with my sister-in-law's Olympus and my friend's Canon. Funnily enough, they're all just about the same when it comes to features, though the Canon did cost way more. It looks a lot nicer though, what with the brushed steel look. However I wouldn't trade my Sony.. it's not quite as good as the one you're looking at but I still just love all of the features and little things it has over the cameras I've got significant experience with, as well as the myriad cameras I've used for very short periods (not long enough to get 'intimate' with the camera's abilities).

I feel it's pretty much a crapshoot. You're either going to be satisfied, or you aren't so much. As long as you get one that is supported and current and doesn't cost under $200-300, it is very hard to go wrong. My camera is far more than I even need right now, for simple personal mementos and web work. The great thing is because I didn't break the bank buying it is that now I've hit my ROI three or four times over (digital vs. film/regular photography), I won't feel bad getting a brand new, obviously better, possibly more expensive digital camera in the next year. But my Sony will still be around for a while.

If you consider printing in A4 with a correct quality, forget about the IXUS and consider in the canon powershot G2 (4.2 Mpixel ) wich is the best digital camera in the 3-5 Mpixel range on the market. The minolta Dimage 7 would be my second recommandation but the price is considerably higher (~1000 euros)..
