Upgrading an iBooks harddrive

There's loads of post on <a href="http://www.xlr8yourmac.com"; target="_blank">www.xlr8yourmac.com</a> <a href="http://www.xlr8yourmac.com"; target="_blank">web page</a>from techies that have done this successfully, but has anyone made a real balls-up of it. There may be 3000 apps for Mac OS X, but how am I supposed to fit them (and my OS 9 apps) onto a 6GB HD?

Also, will any IBM Travelstar 9.5" high drives work with an ageing G3? And what about other brands?

Thanks.

Mostly any 2.5" drive should work in this line-up. So long as it is IDE and the jumpers are set correctly. At this level, OS doesn't really matter too much...but more that matters is if you have IDE.

I hope this gets at your question.

    What's all the fuss about?

Apple don't even recommend a registered apple technician to do this. Well, I have to say it wasn't as difficult as they make it out to be.

I got hold of an IBM travelstar 20GB for £70 from <a href="http://www.itclearance.com"; target="_blank">it clearance</a> ,followed the instructions from the <a href="http://http://www.tznet.com/tittle/PHOTOS_1/iBook1.html"; target="_blank">here</a> and managed to swap them in about 3 hours! Plus another half when I had to pull my iBook apart because of the misaligned monitor clips. And another ten minutes because of a stick trackpad button (torx screws too tight) What I forgot about was how long it takes to reinstall everything again - especially as I've been using Software Update when on a LAN at work. Two hour system update downloads are not recommended when using AOL dial-up.

Oh, yes. I formatted it into two 10GB partitions. Now that took flipping ages too.

Anyway, everything's back to normal and running smoother than the cream on a twinky. Who'd have thought it? A clam-shell iBook SE with as much drive space as the current model?

The free disk space really does speed things up a lot.

Now I suppose I can wait for the G4 ibook before upgrading the rest of it.

lol, dude, the posts you are reading about not touching your iBook are most likely for the Dual USB drive iBooks.

the toilet seat ones aren't bad at all.

the dual USB ones are a bitch and a half.

    congrats on the upgrade though.

But doesn't a normal warranty only last for a year?

yep. in your case you're fine. in my case i voided the warrenty. looking back it was probably stupid, but i got my 20GB now, so i'm not complaining.
