lower G4 tower prices... hmmmm...

macfixit just posted a comment from someone who noticed that the prices have dropped across the entire G4 tower line. apple usually does this and special offers to move inventory before product announcements.

this coupled with the ulta-low-key debut of this new hardware line (i.e. it only got on-line news... no special event, trade show announcement, etc., even though they broke the 1 ghz barrier - perhaps new hardware was nearly ready?), well, it makes me wonder what we'll be seeing at wwdc.

please note that i just don't think they'll be ready by macworld tokyo, but if they do have new rigs (quad? ddram? geforce3 standard? etc. - they said no new chips, so maybe just more of 'em, or better surrounding hardware), i can't imagine them waiting until july to show them off. i know intel is at 4 GHz, but Apple could lay claim to a quad 1 GHz running under OS X (though i have heard that the kernel will need to be modified to recognize four processors).

plus, while wwdc is a software showcase typically, it's also the mecca of high-end mac geeks, which is a good audience for some monster machines.

anyway, just some thoughts.... comments?

The other possibility is that sales have dropped off and they are just trying to move more machines by improving their price/performance. Since they can't improve the performance, they have to improve the price.

I hope you are right though.

How much did they drop by per machine? I'm too lazy to look because I gotta run in a second, but this is curious. Is it another promotion of some kind, or did they just drop the prices a little?

The prices haven't dropped; The person said that the 933Mhz machine dropped to $2299, which is the same price it has always been.

I do believe rok is referring to the price drop from the old systems to the new ones. The dualie is now $3000 instead of $3500, and so on.

janitor, i cited my source, and posed a question. you can either reply or not, but refrain from being a dick about it. it's not like anything else is happening lately in rumor-land, so why not throw out some theory and see what people think?

hey its easy enough to verify a source.

<a href="http://store.apple.com/"; target="_blank">http://store.apple.com/</a>; and you would have found no price drops. Apparantly this was too hard to do for the folks at macfixit. They don't do rumors, so you might find that MOSR is actually more reliable than macfixit.

if you're starved for the rumors the naked mole rat has reappeared on macedition.

    Check out the .edu pricing...

    [code]

    Speed(GHz) - .edu/MSRP($) - delta($)

    733 - 1202/NA - N/A

    800 - 1453/1599 - 146

    933 - 2071/2299 - 228

    DP 1 (Faster) - 2719/2999 - 280

    DP 1 (Ultimate) - 3753/4099 - 346

    </pre><hr></blockquote>

These price differences have certainly changed since I checked last week. I'm sorry for doubting you guys.

This indicative of two things that are not mutually exclusive:

    (1) A change in the way Apple intends to price education.

    (2) PowerMac updates.

If (2) is the case, we do not know when this update will occur, and is a rather uninformative piece of evidence, since updates are inevitable.

Until Apple lowers the price of the low end G4 to $999 we will remain in our little niche. At $999 I'd buy one in a second................................

Dont say I told you so come Tokyo when Apple unveils faster Powermacs...

i wouldn't put any money on it. i'd say there is a 5% chance of new powermacs. apple tends to update their powermacs every 6 months. these powermacs have only been out 2 months max. it is highly unlikely that we'll see new powermacs at MWTY

all you guys are doing are setting yourselves up for a big let down. the same thing happens at EVERY trade show. everyone predicts something that they really WANT with little to no evidence that it actually exists. Everyone wants apple to do the impossible on an impossible time table.

    Don't count on it.

The last thing Apple did was raise the price on additional 512 MB sticks of RAM by $100 each.

That's why you might have noticed the 'ultimate' configuration is $4099 instead of $3899 now.

Don't worry. I doubt we will.

If Steve Jobs ran throught the streets naked with "No new hardware at MWT" written accross his buttocks some people on this board would still question it.

like i said int he original post, i don't see any new towers at tokyo. it'll only be, what, 9 or 10 weeks since the latest ones came out? no way. but wwdc in may is a possibility (apple is on approximately a 5 to 6 month speedbump/refresh rate)...

ipod got announced second week of october (i know 'cause i was down in north carolina for a wedding, and saw the announcement while i was down there), so it's due for somethiong new pretty soon. and tokyo is gadget-CRAZY! (those who have visited know exactly what i am talking about). plus, how long has the powerbook g4 been sitting at the same speed, etc.?

ibook won't see anything until they can get faster g4's in the tibook to widen the performance gap (and if they don't update that 8mb rage 128 mobitlity in the ibook, they're nuts. heck, i'm still using it in my imac i bought nearly three years ago).

imac -- not until july for an update... or even later, if they can't fix this low shipping numbers problem.

Off Topic, but Janitor, are you one of the developers of Fink, or something?

Why is that link to it in your sig?
