my printer has disappeared, can anyone help me?

Please help if you can. I have a dinosaur (7500/100) -- once a proud and gallant new Mac. All of a sudden I started losing my printer. It just doesn't come up in the chooser. I have an HP Laser Jet 5MP. I went to HP to download and reinstall a driver and they send a file (1jlegacyen.hqx) which I can't open. I'm on OS 8.1 and my printer software is 3.0 and it looks like it should be 3.1 but I can't get it. I live in Rockland County, NY and there is nobody fixing Macs. If anyone has some advice for me I would be oh-so grateful.

    You can use stuffit expander to decompress .hqx files.
