700 iBook hard drive noise

i just got a new 700/12.1/combo iBook. i can hear the hard drive making a sort of "enguaging" sound every minute or two. it does this while idle or not, with hard drive sleep enabled or not. i haven't had any problem that would indicate mechanical drive failure or anything. i'm wondering if i should be concerned about this.

and question 2:

my iBook screen has one dead pixel. well, actually, it had two but i was able to "massage" one out. the other one won't massage out though. are there any special massage or other techniques for "waking up" dead pixels? and of course i assume apple warranty doesn't cover the screen for just one pixel...?

Engaging noise? Like what, a brief ticking sound? That's fine, just the OS flushing buffers to disk.

But I'm guessing here 'cause I've no idea what the engaging noise actually sounds like.

Apple only takes back 'books w/ like 7 dead pixels or more, I believe. You could maybe return it to the store you bought it from assumeing you get like 30 money back guarantee or something.

yeah, like a clicking. it almost sounds like a bad drive where the head is hitting against the spindle inside, but it's softer than that.

hmm, it hasn't done it for a good hour and now it's doing it again. =\\

Jakeman: The clicking you hear is the head moving back to resting position. The 10GB drive in the May 2001 iBook (Dual USB) had exactly the same issue. There's absolutely nothing wrong with your drive, even though I admit that I still have heart palpitations from time to time when I hear the clicking sound.
