For the second time when switching back from 9 (so that I can run my music apps) to OSX the drive has disappeared. This time nothing will see it, not System profiler, not OSX Disk Utility nor Norton running under 9. What the fuh is going on? Last time I had to zero everything but at least i could as Disk Utility could see it, now I'm stuck and unhappy. Geniuses, do your stuff.

It could be that your partition table got messed up, if you are using multiple partitions (or even if you aren't, since Macs have multiple partitions anyway for drivers, etc.) Reformatting the entire drive could work, and if you can't from your computer, maybe inserting it in a second computer as a second drive would allow such. (I had a nasty problem when I was playing around with partitions, preventing my computer from booting at all, so I had to reformat from a friend's computer)

Had this as well. I think I either did a PRAM reset or I booted from the install CD and did a repair. Try <a href="http://www.omnigroup.com"; target="_blank">www.omnigroup.com</a> and go to the OS X admins mailing lists for more help.

What music apps? I have heard that Pro Tools can do strange crap to OS X installs that are on the same partition as OS 9.

But......reinstalling OS X from the CD will not overwrite the current install......

There is an option during the install to format the drive but as long as you do not check that box......you should be fine.

I haven't had that exact problem, but I have seen similar things. My Mac OS X refused to read another drive on several occasions, due to a corrupted B Tree node. The solution for this, and many other problems, was Alsoft's DiskWarrior, a disk repair and optimization software suite that comes on its own bootable CD. I highly recommend it. If the data's there, chances are DiskWarrior will be able to get it back for you. I believe it costs around $85, and it's well worth it. Best of luck to you.
