Cable modem to be installed. I anticipate problems
As the title indicates, I'm going to be getting a cable modem from the nice (so far) folks at Comcast. I told them I have a mac running OSX10.1.5 and there was dead silence over the phone. Finally, the guy said, "well, that's different. Is that like OS 8.5? That's what we have the documentation for." I said, "No, but I'm sure we'll be able to figure it out." Maybe that was dumb, but I figured with all of AI's collective wisdom, all procedures and potential problems could be hammered out in the interim (its to be installed on Wednesday.)
Let the advice begin.

You should have went with the self-install. Its so easy its ridiculous.
Plug in cable modem to cable wire, plug in ethernet to cable modem on one end and the other end on the Mac. Set you Mac to DHCP in your TCP/IP settings. Thats it.
But don't worry, they'll manage to screw something up on their end and you won't have access for a few weeks.
Good luck.
<strong>Comcast's tech support and customer service is handled by a company in Canada. They're clueless. It took me days to convince them to fix my problems which they insisted were on my end but were really on their side.

Had they offered me a self-install, I would have gone with it. This install is "free" so I'm not worried about them screwing it up. I'll just kick them out of the house and keep the goods.
So, you set it to DHCP and that's it? There's no numbers to plug in or nuthin'? Cool, thanks.

I wouldn't worry to much. I use COX down here in Phoenix and they are just as clueless
First, I kept losing the signal from their server (router or whatever). This was solved by adding some sort of signal boosting device to the cable box outisde my house.
Second, when I bought my new iMac I had to call them to tell them to purge the MAC address of my old Tangerine iMac from their system. Their server wouldn't recognize my new machine until the old one was removed from their files.
Otherwise I'm quite happy. Install was a snap and took about 15 minutes (I already had a cable line run to the room). The installer actually prefered Macs because the ethernet card is already installed.
I'd heard such bad things about DSL, and Verizon in particular, that I went with Comcast. I just wonder what the hell I'm going to do when I move to India in August.
