My Word 98 is wacked!

I can't cut, copy or paste in any Word document now without the program crashing and the "Error of Type 2" message appearing.

I recently upgraded my iMac DV to OS 9.1, but the problem started before then. I have no idea why.

I can cut, copy or paste in any other program, but not Word 98. And of course, I use Word all the time, and I use that specific function the most. I've even dumped Word and re-installed it. Same problem.

So I increased the memory requirements. Still the same problem.

What's going on, and what can I do? Help!

When you say you increased the memory requirements, do you mean you allocated more memory to Word? How much did you allocate, how much do you have in your machine, and do you have virtual memory on?

I have 128 MB of RAM. I allocated a minimum of 28 to Word, when it suggests 9. That's the memory setting I've always had for Word, and I've had no problems until now.

    I'm wondering if there's a conflict somewhere.

What about the Suggested size? What is that set at?

    Like I said, it suggested 9000 K.

I don't think it's a memory problem... I think it's a Word problem, but I have no idea what could be causing it. Something in the extensions, maybe?

Go to your preferences folder and trash your microsoft preferences. There's also a file called MS Office ACL in there which has Word settings in it. Trash it too. These files wouldn't have been changed with a new install of MS Word, and could be the source of your problems.

Thanks for the tip. I tried it and...

I still have the problem. Everything else in Word works fine. It's just the cut/copy/paste function that causes the program to crash every time.

    Here's what you do.

Use AppleWorks for a little while. Make friends with some of the nice folks here.

With some luck, you will magically be using Office 2001 within a month.

    I've seen it happen.

Thanks to everyone who pitched in on this thread, but I've been able to solve my problem via Apple Tech Support (thankfully, the person who bought me my iMac also purchased AppleCare).

It was a seriously corrupt system folder, which led to me not being able to even reboot my computer a day after I posted my thread.

It's all fixed now. My Word works fine, and other little strange problems that I had don't occur either. It's nice to be using a solid O/S again. Funny enough, it is the first time I've ever had to reload the O/S in the 2 1/2 years of owning this computer, which is pretty impressive, considering that I did that on my Windows machine like every other week or something.
