internal drives?

I want to replace my G4's internal CD with a CD-RW (or CD/DVD-R but they seem too expensive right now),and also install another large/fast hard drive to use for video.

What should I be looking for? Can I install any IDE drives?

well, if indeed you have a g4 tower, not the powerbook g4, then yes any ide drive will work, even

cdr's. The only things propriotory inside is the mobo and the processer.

it is a tower - so I can go down to Circuit City and get a drive off the shelf, even though it doesn't have MacOS on the box?

It should work. You just have to make sure it's bootable, otherwise you won't be able to start up your computer from a CD if you have to.

Check <a href="http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/"; target="_blank">here</a> for compatibility reports, installation tips, and other goodies before purchasing your drive. It saved me a lot of headaches when I swapped my stock DVD with a CDRW/DVD combo. The reports should also say whether or not a particular drive is bootable.
