Audio/Mic In to G4 400

I recently purchased a cheap microphone and was hoping to record some vocal in Cubase 5.1.

However, after connecting this to the audio-in socket, I could not get a signal. I checked the physical mac socket by then connecting a pair of headphones too it, and I got a good signal. So I assumed the mic was dead.

So I then purchase another mic of the same type, and got it checked out in the shop to be working, which it was. When I get home, I get no signal. Checked socket again with h/phones, getting a signal!

As I cant find my Manual, could someone tell me if the audio in on a g4-400 Gigabit ethernet is Line-level or mic level? Its got a mic symbol next to it, but Im wondering if I need a pre-amp.

BTW, Im not stupid enough to be connecting the mic to the line-out socket when I talk of connecting the headphones, so no smart arse replies. You can use a pair of headphones as a mic, but I want to monitor the music as I record over it!

The audio input is line level. The microphone icon was chosen way back to distinguish that input. Paraphrasing one of the Apple developer groups - a picture is worth a thousand icons.

You can either buy a dedicated microphone amp, try to run it through a stereo or a tape player or a video camera which have microphone inputs.

Same thing happend with my PowerMac G4 ... I found that standard "cheap" mics will not work with it. You will need to get an Apple PlainTalk Mic. I got one and now I can get flawless speech recording; I could not find a standard Mic that worked with the PowerMac other than an Apple branded one ...

    Hope this helps ...
