Advice needed for purchasing hard drive for TM

A few months ago I purchased my first Mac (iMac 3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7). I also purchased 2 Macally Hi-Speed Storage Enclosures each with a 1TB hard drive.

Well, I tried setting up Apple's Time Machine, but it's telling me I don't have enough space.

So here's what I'm thinking:

- I need to purchase a 2TB hard drive (maybe this one: WD Caviar Green 2 TB) to replace one of the old 1TB hard drives.

- I would use the new WD 2TB as the Time Machine hard drive.

What are your thoughts? Does this sound like a good option?

Thanks!

Your Time Machine volume needs to be bigger (well... at least AS big) as the drive(s) you wish to back up on it. The more "extra" space you have, the further back in time your saved files will go.

How big is the drive (drives?) you are trying to back up?

Are you using both of those 1TB external drives?... If they are both free/available then you could set them up as a single volume and have a 2TB volume to use with Time Machine. (Keeping in mind that free space on that volume can still be used by you for whatever else you want without affecting the backup file.)
